The Bournemouth and Poole Big Green Fortnight 2011kicks off in style today with East Dorset Friends of the Earth’s Eco Fashion Experience at the Pavilion Dance Centre, Bournemouth. Other great events you can go to today include Blooming Marvellous – a knitted garden exhibition running for the whole fortnight and an Electric Vehicle Display with two electric cars from local firm Think EV on display at various location over the next few days.
The first Big Green Fortnight in 2009 involved more than 7,500 people taking part in over 65 events and raised awareness of green issues in a fun and appealing way. Following this success it is hoped that Bournemouth and Poole Big Green Fortnight 2011 will be even bigger and better! This year’s event is being organised jointly by Bournemouth 2026 and Poole Partnership with support and sponsorship from a range of local organisations and businesses (including the local Transition Towns groups).
The main aim of the Big Green Fortnight is to raise awareness of our natural environment and to promote sustainability across the conurbation. We aim to engage residents, businesses and holidaymakers in informative and exciting ways, offering family-friendly activities that show sustainable living can be easy, healthy, inexpensive and fun.
We have around 50 event organisers, both individuals and organisations, who have organised over 100 events across the fortnight. The programme organisers think that this is the only event of its kind in the UK!
Part of the Big Green Fortnight will be a Big Green Film Festival in Bournemouth and Poole, involving screenings of a variety of ‘green’ themed films across the conurbation. This will include several screenings at the Lighthouse in Poole, a rare opportunity to see a selection of short animations and films on a green theme made by students at the Arts University College Bournemouth on 23rd May and Transition Poole’s cycle-assisted film screening of “In Transition” on 26th May!
