Transition Bournemouth and Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council want to encourage local people to consider repairing damaged items, even if they are unsure how, as they can access an expert at a Repair Cafe, and also learn new skills for next time.
This initiative aims to reduce landfill, challenge throwaway culture, and bring together people from all walks of life in the local community to share tools, time, knowledge and ideas.
Repair Cafes usually held on the third Saturday of the month, usually in the upstairs meeting room of Bournemouth’s central library (in the Triangle).
Repair Cafes are free to attend though donations are very welcome. There is no need to book but if you already know what broken items you are going to bring along you can send us a message via our Bournemouth Repair Café Facebook page or email us firstname.lastname@example.org.
At each event our friendly volunteer Hosts will be on hand to welcome members of the public to the Repair Café. The customer will be matched with an expert Fixer who will talk them through the problem and hopefully fix the broken item.
If the event is very busy customers will be guided to a waiting area where they can buy hot and cold drinks and cakes.
Bournemouth Repair Café has continued to expand in scope, recruiting more volunteers and fixing more items. We mainly deal with household electrical appliances like kettles, lamps, electric tools, hairdryers etc, but have also given many items of clothing a new lease of life. In addition, we have also mended miscellaneous items of furniture and ornaments.
Bournemouth Repair Café has PAT testing equipment present at our events and will have multiple members of the volunteer team trained and ready in this area.
Our events are advertised on our website, our Transition Bournemouth Discussion Forum on Facebook and our Transition Bournemouth Facebook page. You can also follow updates about the projects and events via our Bournemouth Repair Café Facebook page.
We need you!
As part of our events, we need skilled volunteers to act as ‘Fixers’ so if you are handy, hate waste and would love to share your repairs skills we would appreciate you being able to give broken items a new lease of life!
We are looking for ‘Fixers’ to give as much or as little time as they can spare, including ‘Fixers’ who are handy with:
- Small electrical appliances
- Laptops and mobile phones
- Furniture/wooden objects
If you are not a repair expert, but would like to be part of Bournemouth Repair Cafe events then we also require Hosts for the events. Our host would welcome visitors, be a contact for the ‘Fixers’, and provide hot and cold drinks and cakes.
